The inaugural lounge is set to welcome travelers by the end of the year at JetBlue’s primary hub, New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK). Located in Terminal 5 near gates 24 and 25, the space will occupy the former Airspace Lounge, which ceased operations in 2018. Following this milestone, JetBlue will expand its premium footprint with a second lounge opening at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in 2026.

While anticipation is high, JetBlue remains tight-lipped about what exactly these exclusive spaces will offer. However, the airline has made one thing clear—these lounges will not resemble Delta Air Lines’ renowned Sky Club or the upscale Delta One Lounge at JFK’s Terminal 4.

This distinction is noteworthy, as Delta is widely regarded as the gold standard for premium travel experiences among U.S. carriers. Many competitors, including United Airlines, have worked to mirror Delta’s successful approach to luxury travel.

Even JetBlue, traditionally known for its budget-friendly model, has been steering toward a more premium experience. The airline is rolling out an upgraded domestic first-class cabin and has recently inked a new credit card partnership aimed at maximizing loyalty-based revenue—both moves reminiscent of Delta’s strategies at the top end of the market.

A New Chapter for JFK’s Terminal 5

When Terminal 5 at JFK debuted nearly two decades ago, it was considered a game-changer for passenger convenience. Designed with the post-9/11 travel landscape in mind, the terminal featured an expansive security checkpoint to accommodate heightened screening measures.

JetBlue also made an effort to capture the essence of New York, curating a selection of 22 dining and retail concessions that included outposts of beloved local establishments. In a forward-thinking move, the terminal even introduced technology that allowed passengers to order food directly to their gate—an innovation that, at the time, felt like a glimpse into the future.

Now, with the introduction of its premium lounges, JetBlue is ushering in yet another evolution of its flagship terminal, offering travelers a new level of comfort and exclusivity.

JetBlue’s Terminal 5 Evolves as New York’s Airport Landscape Transforms

When JetBlue’s Terminal 5 opened at JFK, it was a breath of fresh air compared to other terminals—especially those at LaGuardia Airport (LGA). Its sleek, modern design reinforced JetBlue’s image as a dynamic, youthful airline that put customers first in the New York market.

Fast forward to today, and both the airline and the industry have undergone major shifts. JetBlue recently marked its 25th anniversary, and it now ranks as the seventh-largest airline in the U.S. by seat capacity, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. No longer the scrappy upstart, JetBlue now faces many of the same hurdles as legacy carriers, including rising operational costs and competition from newer, more agile airlines.

Meanwhile, New York’s airport infrastructure has undergone a significant facelift. Over the last two decades, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has spearheaded an ambitious modernization effort. LaGuardia now boasts brand-new Terminals B and C, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has introduced a state-of-the-art Terminal A, and JFK is set to welcome two new international terminals alongside the expanded and upgraded Terminal 4.

While Terminal 5 still holds its own, its once-cutting-edge design is beginning to show signs of age. That’s why JetBlue recently unveiled a major refresh, centered around new concessions and an updated passenger experience near gates 14 and 15.

A Fresh Take on Terminal 5’s Dining and Retail Experience

By the end of 2026, travelers passing through Terminal 5 will see a massive expansion of dining and retail offerings. JetBlue plans to introduce around 40 new concessions, including popular names like Eataly and Shake Shack. The terminal’s central atrium—referred to as the “grandstand” area—will also be transformed into a New York-inspired parklet, adding greenery and a more inviting atmosphere.

While JetBlue’s leadership insists that the existing concessions are well-loved, certain high-traffic spots—such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks—often become overcrowded during peak morning departures. That’s why the refresh also includes expansions for these popular outlets.

According to Sabine Trenk, CEO of Fraport USA—the firm managing Terminal 5 operations—the focus on local brands has been a winning formula. Travelers appreciate unique, homegrown options, which in turn drive high satisfaction scores and strong sales performance. Some of the upcoming additions include Birch Coffee, The Halal Guys, Jacob’s Pickles, and Leon’s Bagels, further reinforcing the terminal’s New York identity.

Doubling the Food and Beverage Space

When Terminal 5 first opened in 2008, it housed 22 food and beverage outlets. With this latest upgrade, JetBlue is set to more than double that number, significantly expanding dining options for passengers. Some of the original vendors have since changed hands or shut down, but the new lineup aims to create a more diverse and satisfying experience for travelers.

Even longtime favorites like Dunkin’ and Starbucks will receive expanded locations to better handle peak-hour crowds. The additional space is expected to alleviate congestion and improve overall service efficiency.

Enhancements on a Practical Budget

JetBlue, along with its partners Fraport and the Port Authority, is committing around $100 million to the Terminal 5 enhancements. While this is a substantial investment, it’s a fraction of the multibillion-dollar budgets allocated for brand-new terminals at LaGuardia and Newark. The upcoming Terminals 1 and 6 at JFK alone are projected to cost over $19 billion.

Given these financial constraints, much of the Terminal 5 refresh is focused on aesthetic and functional improvements rather than large-scale infrastructure changes. Renderings showcase a parklet-style seating area with trees and greenery, accented by blue lampposts reminiscent of New York City’s streetscapes. Though a visually appealing addition, it’s a more subtle upgrade compared to eye-catching features like the iconic green wall at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN).

Additionally, the terminal will welcome approximately 30 new art installations from local artists, further enhancing its sense of place.

As JetBlue navigates the evolving airline industry, these updates signal a commitment to keeping Terminal 5 competitive, convenient, and reflective of the airline’s New York roots.
