Permafrost instability, worsened by climate change, led to an “unprecedented” level of ground movement, according to former Denali Superintendent Don Striker.
Harsh winters and the need to protect nesting wildlife have slowed repair efforts, pushing the anticipated road reopening to 2027. For travelers accustomed to Denali’s classic daylong bus excursions, this means a shorter experience. However, for those craving a more exclusive and adventurous journey, select backcountry lodges are offering fly-in access to the park’s remote western region—an opportunity to experience Denali with fewer visitors.
A stay at one of these wilderness lodges includes a scenic flight over the rugged Alaska Range, making the journey just as breathtaking as the destination itself. But travelers must act fast—this rare opportunity to experience Denali without the usual crowds will end once the road reopens.
Camp Denali: A Legacy of Wilderness Hospitality
Located at mile 89, Camp Denali has been welcoming guests since before Alaska achieved statehood. With over 75 years of history, this lodge has maintained access to parts of the park that others cannot reach. In 2025, it will be the only property permitted to operate vehicles beyond the landslide-impacted section of Denali Park Road.

Also at mile 92, Kantishna Roadhouse stands out as the only Indigenous-owned and -operated lodge in Denali’s backcountry. Normally, the property accommodates up to 165 overnight guests in 33 cabins, with an additional influx of over 200 daytime visitors enjoying meals and activities. However, in this limited-access period, Kantishna has drastically reduced capacity to just 15 overnight guests at a time, offering a rare opportunity to experience Denali in an intimate and authentic setting.
