Restaurateur Anil Goswami felt the vast Indian market would be great to enter if he found the right partner.

Singaporean restaurateur Anil Goswami’s journey from DJ to brand creator and multiple outlet owner began with a chance night out in Prague where he was performing.

“I stumbled upon a concept that served good food and inexpensive liquor. I fell in love with it immediately and when I returned to Singapore, I decided to open my first Al Capone in a small 800 square-feet space on Orchard Road,” Goswami recalled speaking to hoteldealers.in.

Since the first outlet opened in 2014 with a model that allowed them to serve food and liquor relatively inexpensively in the city State, they have now expanded to 13 outlets in Singapore (five pre-pandemic and eight more since then). The next step for Goswami was to expand to Malaysia, he said.

On the subject of the India market, he was keen to see his other brand, Rocking Rickshaw—an Indianised rock cafe concept, which Goswami began in 2020. They have one outlet in Singapore with one each soon to open in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, he said.

“India is a big market for us, but we have not planned anything yet. We are a bit sceptical whether we will be able to keep up with the innovative nature of business in India and how well we can control it from Singapore. If I do get a right local partner in India, in the F&B industry, then of course we will be there,” he said about entering the subcontinent.

But when he does arrive here, Goswami has big plans—“The dream is of course to own a building with Bollywood-themed rooms and a great Rocking Rickshaw cafe with merchandise shop,” he said.

Till such time, Goswami supports the Indian diaspora market as best he can within the labour laws of his country.

“Al Capone’s and Rocking Rickshaw is wholly owned by me and we have about 120 staff that allows me to have about nine to 10 Indians working for me,” he said adding, “Apart from that I have given work to 40 musicians from India who all work with me.”

Music is something that continues to be Goswami’s passion and an integral part of both his outlets.
