SM Shervani, MD, Shervani Hotels.SM Shervani, managing director of Shervani Hotels and a leading figure in the industry, announced his retirement from all trade association activities. Shervani said he wanted trade and industry associations to set a retirement age for its leadership so that new people could come into the system. Unless the old guard stepped down, new people could not come and drive these associations.“I have been demanding this for a very long time. Therefore, I want to set an example myself by retiring from the association and its managing committee,” he said in a telephonic interaction with ETHospitalityWorld.Shervani made this decision while stepping down from all committees of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Northern India (HRANI) after being active for over three decades.While the hospitality industry in the country has changed a lot in the last few decades, the industry associations, unfortunately, haven’t been able to keep pace with it because the leadership in these associations haven’t allowed fresh blood to come into the leadership, he felt. Any association is as good as its members, he said, adding “Unless we allow young people to come in and groom them to leadership positions, associations will lose their relevance”. “Young people are not coming in because they are not being encouraged to and express themselves by the old guards” he rued.Because of this, successful people are losing interest in the trade associations and “mediocrity” has been seeping into the system, he added.This is one of the reasons why governments and policy-makers for not taking the industry and its demands—even though genuine—seriously, Shervani felt. “We have been talking about the same issues for years together without any results,” he said. “Everyone understands the positive impact tourism can create for the economy as well as its potential as an employment generator. But nobody is serious about doing anything about it,” Shervani said, adding that trade associations should ponder about it. “Young people can definitely think of new and more effective ways of engaging with governments and policymakers,” he concluded.
