The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (the Alliance) proudly announces a groundbreaking partnership with OceanShot and Deborah Brosnan & Associates following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) CEO Summit in London. This landmark collaboration focuses on integrating nature-based solutions into the hospitality industry, aiming for Net Positive Hospitality through science-driven, regenerative solutions that benefit both the environment and the sector.
The MOU, effective for three years, outlines key milestones, including the development of a comprehensive framework, implementation of pilot programmes, and continuous evaluation of progress. Leveraging the SMI’s powerful network, the Alliance is poised to support the adoption of these initiatives across the hospitality industry, ensuring that they align with industry standards.
With a reach of 66,000 hotels and over 8 million rooms worldwide, the Alliance remains dedicated to accelerating sustainability efforts within the sector. Its overarching vision is to create a hospitality industry that gives back more to destinations than it takes, a goal that perfectly aligns with the work of OceanShot and Deborah Brosnan & Associates, who specialize in ecosystem services that enhance biodiversity, resilience, and return on investment.
Dr. Deborah Brosnan, an internationally recognized ocean and resilience scientist, and OceanShot, launched in collaboration with philanthropist and business leader John Paul DeJoria, are spearheading efforts to restore vital ocean ecosystems and protect coastal communities. Their flagship project, a reef restoration initiative off the coast of Antigua and Barbuda, uses specially designed reef modules to revive ecosystems, protect shoreline communities, and mitigate the impacts of storms and rising sea levels. The next phase of the project will include the opening of the Innovation Learning Lab in 2025, further expanding efforts to rebuild ocean-dependent local economies.
In the context of the hospitality industry, the focus will be on creating measurable metrics to demonstrate the value of biodiversity, economic returns, and resilience. Key areas such as risk reduction and vulnerability reduction will be integral to demonstrating the benefits of nature-based solutions. The collaboration seeks to position the hospitality industry at the forefront of environmental sustainability by developing best practices for integrating ecosystem services into operations and creating scalable regenerative models that benefit local communities.
Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, emphasized, “The hospitality industry holds a unique opportunity to lead in environmental stewardship while generating long-term value. By working with OceanShot and Deborah Brosnan & Associates, we are taking a bold step toward embedding regenerative solutions into hospitality design and operations.”
Dr. Deborah Brosnan, President of Deborah Brosnan & Associates and co-founder of OceanShot, added, “Nature is our ally, and by aligning our actions with the environment, we can create true sustainability. We are thrilled to partner with the Alliance, as the hospitality industry increasingly values its reliance on nature. Collaboration is essential to fostering environmental regeneration.”
Key Initiatives and Future Plans
Under the terms of the MOU, the Alliance, OceanShot, and Deborah Brosnan & Associates will collaborate on several strategic initiatives, including:
- Co-creating guidelines and metrics for integrating nature-based solutions into hospitality projects, aligning with the Alliance’s priority to update its Universal Sustainability Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Identifying and executing high-impact pilot projects under the Alliance’s Impact Fund, which aims to turn strategy into action and positively impact communities and the environment.
- Fostering knowledge sharing to drive industry-wide adoption of best practices and advocating for the importance of nature-based solutions through thought leadership and engagement.
The collaboration is designed to leverage OceanShot’s expertise in ecosystem restoration and Deborah Brosnan’s pioneering work in nature-based solutions to transform the hospitality sector into a model of sustainability. Through this partnership, the Alliance aims to accelerate sustainability transitions across hospitality businesses, helping the sector to become more resilient and responsible.
Future Outlook: Advancing Sustainability in Hospitality
This partnership represents a significant step forward in the hospitality industry’s sustainability journey. By aligning with OceanShot and Deborah Brosnan & Associates, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance is driving innovation in environmental regeneration and biodiversity preservation within the hospitality sector.
Glenn Mandziuk concluded, “This partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration in driving meaningful environmental change. By harmonizing sustainability metrics and fostering innovation, we are paving the way for a more resilient and responsible hospitality sector that is committed to preserving the environment for future generations.”
The World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s efforts to integrate nature-based solutions into the core of the hospitality sector will provide the foundation for a greener and more sustainable industry, setting a new benchmark for global tourism.
