To tap into the tourism potential, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has floated tenders to develop three hill stations—Yelagiri, Jawadhu, and Kolli Hills—into major tourism hubs, all within a six to eight-hour drive from Chennai. “These destinations will offer novel experiences while preserving the natural beauty and tranquility that hill stations are known for,” said B Chandra Mohan, Tamil Nadu tourism secretary. This initiative is expected to boost the local economy and provide new destinations for nature lovers. In Yelagiri, TTDC has identified a five-acre government-owned site for constructing a camping site that can accommodate 50 tourists with both conventional and glamping tents. Additionally, the site will feature a zipline, rope walking facilities, and boating. Kolli Hills will see similar developments on a 12-acre site, including an eco-resort and a restaurant with a bonfire area. TTDC is also exploring the possibility of introducing rappelling at the waterfalls. Despite its recent popularity among YouTubers and Instagram influencers for its scenic ghat roads with 70 hairpin bends, Kolli Hills lacks basic infrastructure and safety remains a concern. The absence of changing rooms or washrooms at waterfalls, and the presence of men consuming alcohol openly, have been noted issues. Last year, the falls were closed following a man’s death from a heart attack while trekking, said travel vlogger K Rahul, stressing the need for basic infrastructure before developing such key initiatives. TTDC officials said that they have allocated Rs 2 crore to address these concerns.Jawadhu Hills, unlike the other two spots, is a lesser-known tourism site with fewer than half-a-dozen hotels. TTDC plans to enhance tourism by involving tribal communities, allowing tourists to visit their homes and learn about their culture. The town is known for many temples and local festivals.Previously frequented mainly by filmmakers for shootings, the area has great tourism potential, according to VKT Balan from the Tamil Nadu Tourism Federation. TTDC’s focus on this location is expected to generate additional revenue, create job opportunities for local tribal communities, and boost real estate in nearby areas. A few people have already started purchasing land here following the announcement by Tourism Minister M Mathiventhan last year, he said. “The roads leading to these hill stations are well-maintained, making it easier for tourists to visit. We see more customers and longer trips, which helps us earn better,” said Manikandan, a local taxi driver from Namakkal with over 15 years of experience.
