Agoda’s recent 2025 Sustainable Travel Survey highlights a notable trend among South Korean travelers, with a significant 73% considering sustainability when planning their trips. This figure stands above the average of 68% for all Asian travelers, showcasing South Korea’s leading role in the sustainable travel movement across the continent.
The survey, which gathered insights from over 6,000 participants across 11 Asian countries, illustrates the growing prominence of authentic, meaningful travel experiences and the preference for off-peak tourism to lessen environmental impact.
Authenticity and Purpose in Travel
In South Korea, the drive for more sustainable travel is largely fueled by the desire for authentic experiences, which 23% of travelers cite as their primary motivation. Additionally, 22% are influenced by personal values and beliefs, and 20% aim to positively impact local communities through their travel choices. This shift points to a broader trend of seeking engagements that are both enriching and respectful to destinations.
Strategic Travel Timing and Eco-friendly Practices
A strategic approach to travel timing is also emerging, with 26% of South Korean respondents choosing to travel during off-peak seasons to avoid overcrowding and minimize environmental strain. Moreover, a commitment to reducing waste is evident, as 16% of travelers now include reusable items like water bottles and shopping bags in their packing list, further contributing to sustainability efforts.
Lee Joonhwan, Country Director, South Korea at Agoda, shared, “It’s great to see South Korean travelers wanting to leave a positive impact, and Agoda is here to support their journey. With our Eco Deals Program, travelers can enjoy great discounts on partnering properties and Agoda contributes one US dollar towards local conservation efforts for every booking through the program.”
Agoda has recently introduced its 2025 Eco Deals program, providing up to 15% discounts on accommodations at partner hotels throughout 10 Asian markets. This year marks an exciting expansion with Japan and South Korea participating in the Eco Deals campaign for the first time, enhancing opportunities for travelers to Asia to engage in eco-friendly tourism.
The program not only offers financial benefits but also supports environmental conservation; for every booking made under the Eco Deals, Agoda contributes a dollar to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) projects. These initiatives focus on wildlife protection and the preservation of essential habitats in Asia.
