As the 2025 Hajj season reaches full swing, Saudi Arabia finds itself in a race against rising temperatures—and time. The heat is merciless. With daytime highs surging between 40°C and 47°C, the health of millions of Muslim pilgrims journeying to the holy sites is hanging in delicate balance. The Saudi Ministry of Health has already confirmed five cases of heat exhaustion among pilgrims. Fortunately, each individual received urgent medical care and is now stable.
However, this early warning has ignited a powerful response.
Saudi Arabia is not taking any chances. This year, the Kingdom has launched one of the most comprehensive heat-mitigation campaigns in Hajj history. Their efforts are driven by urgency, foresight, and an unyielding duty to safeguard every soul participating in this sacred journey.
Over 50,000 health professionals—doctors, emergency responders, and technical staff—are now stationed across key pilgrimage zones, including Makkah, Mina, and Arafat. Their mission: to monitor, treat, and prevent heat-related health crises in real-time.
But this massive deployment is only the beginning.
The Saudi government has opened a newly constructed 200-bed emergency hospital in Mina, alongside three additional field hospitals with a combined capacity exceeding 1,200 beds. These mobile medical hubs stand ready to deliver life-saving interventions at a moment’s notice.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has fortified its physical infrastructure. To shield pilgrims from direct sun exposure, the Kingdom has added over 50,000 square meters of shaded walkways throughout high-traffic areas. Cooling is now a frontline defense. More than 400 misting fans and dedicated hydration and cooling stations are spread throughout the pilgrimage route, providing critical relief from the brutal desert sun.
At ground level, they’ve even re-engineered the very path pilgrims walk. Major walkways have been resurfaced with heat-reflective materials, reducing ground temperature and preventing blistering burns underfoot.

The Ministry of Health has launched multilingual awareness campaigns across radio, television, billboards, and social media. These messages are designed to reach every pilgrim—no matter where they’re from or what language they speak. The road ahead still presents hurdles. Weather projections indicate the heatwave may intensify further as the peak Hajj days approach. But with the current momentum, the system in place is built not only for resilience but also for rapid expansion if needed.
