Existing trends through establishment of Seafest Regency and Pearl Bohey Dulang Resorts suggest a rise in confidence in the area largely founded upon security improvements through the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom). The improvements underpin the broader campaign to expand Sabah’s tourism sector and enhance the experience in visiting the area.
In the last few years, Semporna and surrounding islands have experienced a great redevelopment with investments in various new resorts, hotels, and eco-lodges due to increasing demand for first-class accommodation. In the first five months of 2025, Sabah had already attracted 1.44 million visitors and had garnered estimated tourism receipts amounting to RM3.3 million. The Sabah Tourism Board reports that international visitors accounted for 559,150 arrivals between January and May 2025. The top international markets include China, with 243,688 visitors, and South Korea, with 76,685. There has also been a notable rise in visitors from Europe, particularly the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and France, which reflects a broader global interest in Sabah as a travel destination.
Domestic tourism has also been a driving force, with 879,420 domestic tourists visiting the state during the same period. This dual market, encompassing both international and local visitors, has helped bolster the region’s tourism economy, especially as people seek new and safe destinations for leisure travel.

Sustainability is at the heart of Sabah’s tourism growth strategy.
