Many tourists look for relief in places that provide both cool relief and beauty because Korea experiences intense heat and heavy rains during the summer months. North Chungcheong Province’s Okcheon County has become a popular getaway destination. Regardless of the weather, Okcheon promises an unforgettable experience with its captivating forest caverns and colourful hillside gardens.
A Cool Haven: The Forest Cave at Jangryeongsan Nature Recreation Forest
Tucked at the foot of Mount Jangryeong, Jangryeongsan Nature Recreation Forest has long been cherished as a peaceful retreat by locals. With a range of outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and lodge stays, the forest offers ample opportunities to connect with nature. However, a recent addition to this nature haven has significantly boosted its popularity: the “forest cave”, which was created from a repurposed iron mine.
The Dongguk Mine, which once supplied iron ore to regions across Korea, ceased operations in the late 1960s, leaving behind abandoned tunnels. For over 50 years, these tunnels lay forgotten. However, thanks to a government redevelopment programme, the site has now been transformed into a captivating tourist attraction. The converted cave stretches for about 100 metres and takes no longer than 10 minutes to explore. Despite its short length, the cave offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of miners through creative displays that showcase the history of iron mining.
The atmosphere inside the cave is enhanced by vibrant lighting, which gives it a mystical, otherworldly feel. Its colourful illumination has earned the site significant attention on social media platforms, drawing many more visitors. In fact, the number of visitors has surged by 20,000 from last year, with over 73,000 people coming to the recreation forest in the span of a few months.
Inside the cave, the path branches off into two, with one path leading to a unique photo spot where cascading artificial wisteria vines are lit with glowing lights, creating a perfect backdrop for photographs. As visitors continue along the cave’s winding path, they reach the highlight of the tour—a room bathed in blue light, with a sculpted moon and stars creating a visual representation of a night sky. The experience is further enhanced by wave-like lighting along the walls, resembling nebulae or the Northern Lights. This breathtaking spectacle has earned the cave the nickname “Aurora Cave”. A notable feature of the cave is the “wishing rock”, which allows visitors to leave behind their hopes and dreams, paying homage to a historical boulder linked to the independence activist Cho Heon.
Cheonsang Garden: A Heavenly Escape Amidst Hydrangeas
A mere 25 kilometres away from Jangryeongsan Nature Recreation Forest lies Cheonsang Garden, a private aquatic plant garden set against the backdrop of Daecheong Lake. Recognised as one of the “30 most beautiful private gardens” by the Korea Forest Service, Cheonsang Garden is often referred to as the “heavenly garden”. The 60,000-square-metre garden was opened in 2009 and offers visitors an immersive experience that blends natural beauty with artistic design.
The garden features over 500 plant species, along with striking stone gardens and structures that evoke the grandeur of European castles. Visitors can wander through themed pavilions, each designed to reflect a particular theme or atmosphere. Signs throughout the garden encourage guests to take their time, with phrases like “Do not walk faster than the wind” and “Hear the whispers of flowers and trees,” reminding everyone to slow down and connect with the environment.
The garden was founded by environmental activist Ju Seo-taek, who began planting on the site in 2003. Today, it attracts more than 200,000 visitors annually. Among the garden’s most captivating features are its hydrangeas, which bloom in full splendour during the summer months. Okcheon County is well known as one of the best places in Korea to enjoy hydrangeas, and the county also boasts the nation’s largest hydrangea seedling production area, responsible for supplying 70% of the hydrangea seedlings across the country.
From July through August, the garden is transformed by the sight of thousands of hydrangeas, their white blossoms filling the air with a delicate, sweet fragrance. The Limelight panicle hydrangeas, which have been planted since 2021, are now in full bloom, adding a stunning touch to the garden’s already vibrant landscape. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the garden’s circular trails or venture to the central observatory for an even more panoramic view of the floral spectacle.
The park’s collection of over 30,000 hydrangeas creates a breathtaking visual display. The circular path around the garden is lined with hydrangea bushes, while the central area offers an even grander display of these cotton-candy-like blossoms. The sight of these beautiful flowers—so intricately arranged and in full bloom—has made Cheonsang Garden one of the most sought-after destinations in Okcheon during the summer months.
Okcheon’s Appeal Beyond the Flowers
Okcheon County offers visitors more than just cool caves and stunning gardens. It’s a place where nature and history intertwine, allowing travellers to experience Korea’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Whether it’s the cool, serene environment of the forest cave or the peaceful, flower-filled paths of Cheonsang Garden, Okcheon provides a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Visitors to the county can also explore its other natural attractions, including the nearby Daecheong Lake, which provides ample opportunities for boating, fishing, and leisurely walks along the shoreline. The area is also known for its traditional markets and local eateries, offering a taste of the region’s authentic cuisine.
In addition, Okcheon’s efforts to preserve its natural beauty and promote eco-tourism make it an ideal destination for those looking to enjoy a sustainable and mindful travel experience. The county’s initiatives to protect its environment while welcoming visitors have set a standard for other regions in South Korea.
