Netas join noise pollution protest at Anjuna & Vagator, Goa, Hospitality News, hoteldealers.in | www.hoteldealers.in

Anjuna and Vagator residents have upped their ante against loud music being played by clubs beyond 10pm over the extended Independence Day weekend.Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo led the residents to the Anjuna police station demanding action against loud music. Later, the residents joined South Goa MP Viriato Fernandes and Congress president Amit Patkar in a candlelight march to the club and police station to protest police inaction. Anjuna PI Paresh Naik said that all the clubs in their jurisdiction have shut down for causing inconvenience to the people by playing loud music beyond 10pm.“Anjuna police booked Sylroy Maskell, a Calangute resident, for playing loud music beyond the permissible time at his restaurant, namely ‘Thalassa by Cliff’, located at Ozrant, Vagator, hence causing noise pollution in the area against the provision of the Noise Pollution Regulation and Control Rules, 2000, and The Environment Protection Act, 1986,” North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said.Lobo said people take permission in the name of bar and restaurant from the panchayat and then turn them into open-air clubs and play music day and night. “Our people rent premises to Delhi and Mumbai people, and they don’t know our culture. In our restaurant, we lower the music at 10pm,” Lobo said. She urged the chief minister to frame a club policy for the state. “Somewhere things need to be put in order. Tourism is the backbone of our economy and we want tourists to come, but we want balanced tourism. We don’t want tourism with loud music. Anjuna PI has assured us to shut down music at 10pm,” Lobo said.“We will not come here (Anjuna police station) again but we will go and sit at the high court,” the Siolim MLA said. She said that she will meet the chief minister over the club policy.Residents have raised the loud music issue for the last two years.Locals have filed complaints before police, Goa State Pollution Control Board and the MLA. “I have two daughters and both are to appear for board exams. During the board exams, they cannot study. In July, I got fed up calling Anjuna police station to act against loud music. It has also become a health issue for us as we all don’t get proper sleep. My neighbour died due to loud music. Senior citizens don’t get proper sleep,” Anthony, a Vagator resident, said.“The MLA had gone to the police station to defuse the candlelight march. The protest will not fail, and the MLA will not succeed in misleading the locals. All are getting haftas. Because of haftas, our people have died and our culture has died,” the South Goa MP said.“The court has taken up the issue and still violations continue, which means law and order has failed. Chief minister Pramod Sawant is responsible for the health of Goans. All this drug culture is because of him,” he said.
