Madagascar is set to become a more prominent destination on the global tourism stage, thanks in part to the leadership of Her Excellency Viviane Dewa, the Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts of Madagascar. During the prestigious Global Tourism Forum (GTF) Leaders’ Dinner in Dubai, Minister Dewa shared her vision for Madagascar’s tourism sector, emphasizing the transformative opportunities that tourism and handicrafts present for the nation. This event provided her with a platform to foster connections, discuss the country’s needs, and generate investment opportunities for the island nation’s growing tourism sector.

Minister Dewa brings a wealth of expertise to her role, having previously served as the Chair of the Federation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madagascar and at the World Chambers Federation. Under her leadership, Madagascar has begun to implement a comprehensive strategy that targets tourism as a primary economic driver. “Tourism and handicrafts are not just cultural expressions; they are vital pillars of sustainable economic development,” Dewa explained in her address.
According to the Minister, Madagascar is uniquely positioned to leverage its rich cultural heritage, extraordinary biodiversity, and pristine landscapes to attract international tourists. However, she emphasized the need for continued investments in infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of travelers. “To unlock our full potential, we need around 10,000 rooms of international standard. This forum allowed me to speak directly to those who can help make that a reality,” she added, reflecting on the necessity of infrastructure development.

Setting an ambitious goal, Minister Dewa announced that Madagascar aims to attract 1 million tourists by 2028. This target reflects a significant increase from the 259,850 tourist arrivals recorded in 2023, underscoring the government’s commitment to expanding the tourism sector.

To support this growth, Madagascar is undertaking major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Antananarivo–Toamasina toll highway. This project aims to reduce travel time between the capital and the port city, facilitating easier access for tourists and enhancing the overall travel experience.

Minister Dewa also emphasized the importance of promoting Madagascar’s rich handicraft heritage. She visited Ateliers Feel Good, a Malagasy company renowned for its high-end raffia and embroidery products, which employ over 1,200 artisans, the majority of whom are women. These initiatives aim to combine tradition with sustainable economic development, providing livelihoods and preserving cultural heritage.
