Koh Samui, Thailand, has emerged as a standout destination in 2025, showing impressive growth in air and cruise arrivals despite ongoing global challenges.

According to the newly released Samui Hotel & Tourism Market Review 2025 by consulting group C9 Hotelworks, the island’s tourism performance remains resilient, fuelled by strong airlift, a growing cruise industry, and an expanding reputation as a wellness tourism hub.

From January to April 2025, Koh Samui International Airport reported a 9% increase in passenger arrivals compared to the same period in 2024, totalling 1,127,832 passengers. This follows a banner year for the island in 2024, which saw air arrivals surpass 2.78 million, a 21% year-on-year rise and exceeding pre-pandemic levels from 2019. As a key international gateway, Koh Samui continues to attract global visitors with its robust infrastructure and strategic location in Southeast Asia.

Cruise Tourism Boosts Island Growth

Cruise tourism has also played a pivotal role in Koh Samui’s strong performance. The island welcomed 35 cruise ships, carrying 65,792 passengers between January and April 2025, marking a 6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The previous year saw Koh Samui host 50 cruise liners, nearly doubling its cruise arrivals compared to the prior year. The uptick in both air and cruise arrivals signals Koh Samui’s resilience in maintaining high visitor numbers despite global tourism disruptions.

Wellness Tourism: Koh Samui’s Emerging Niche

A notable trend contributing to Koh Samui’s growth is its rising status as a wellness tourism hotspot. With global travellers increasingly prioritising health and wellness, the island has become a popular destination for those seeking a restorative getaway. Renowned wellness properties like Kamalaya lead the way in attracting wellness-focused tourists, offering year-round services and longer stays. Koh Samui is benefiting from this global trend in wellness tourism, which promises sustainable and high-value growth in the hospitality sector.

Bill Barnett, Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, emphasised the island’s success in attracting wellness travellers: “Koh Samui is increasingly appealing to those seeking a wellness-focused experience, which is shaping the island’s tourism profile. This market segment offers significant potential for continued growth and stability in the hospitality industry.”

Resilient Hotel Performance and Strong Demand

Koh Samui’s hotel market has also demonstrated stability, with positive performance metrics in early 2025. Hotel occupancy peaked in January with an 8% increase year-on-year, and overall, occupancy levels for 2024 rose by 12% compared to 2023. In terms of pricing, Koh Samui’s Average Daily Rate (ADR) has been climbing steadily, with a 9% increase in 2024 and a remarkable 21% surge in April 2025 compared to the same month in 2024.

Jesper Palmqvist, Area Director for Asia Pacific at STR, commented on the island’s strong hotel performance: “Koh Samui’s hotel market is showing meaningful growth, with increases in both occupancy and ADR. This reflects sustained demand from key source markets and a positive pricing environment, with limited new supply ensuring stability in the market.”

European Tourists Lead the Charge

European visitors remain Koh Samui’s most significant source market, contributing 56% of total arrivals in 2024. Countries like Germany, the United Kingdom, and France are driving much of the growth, supported by expanded codeshare agreements between Bangkok Airways and 30 global carriers. The Singapore Airlines Scoot service has also been instrumental in linking long-haul travellers from Europe to Koh Samui through its Lion City hub.

“The long-haul market has performed exceptionally well this year, and we are seeing strong results from our strategic focus on European travellers,” said Remko Kroesen, Area General Manager at Banyan Tree Samui and Banyan Tree Krabi.

New Developments Signal Investor Confidence

Koh Samui’s hotel market continues to attract investors, with new luxury properties on the horizon. The island currently boasts 634 registered accommodation providers, offering 24,188 keys. While overall supply has grown at a steady pace, new branded hotels are set to open soon, including Nivata Koh Samui (Tapestry Collection by Hilton) in Q4 2025 and both SO/ by Sofitel and Fivelements Samui in 2026.

As the island faces renewed demand post-pandemic, the hospitality sector is adjusting by focusing on luxury, safety, and sustainability. Thansita Sirapastuwanon, Director of Sales & Marketing at Centara Reserve Samui, shared her perspective: “The pandemic has pushed us to rethink luxury, focusing on safety and sustainability. As travel rebounds, demand from emerging and traditional markets continues to boost Koh Samui’s luxury tourism offerings.”

Looking to the Future: Optimism for Continued Growth

Despite challenges faced by the global tourism industry, Koh Samui’s future looks bright. Bill Barnett remains optimistic about the island’s prospects for the rest of 2025: “Barring any external disruptions, we expect continued growth in arrivals, hotel occupancy, and rates throughout the remainder of the year. This growth will be supported by sustained demand from both European and Asian markets, combined with limited new hotel supply and ongoing infrastructure investments.”

Koh Samui’s tourism market continues to evolve, with its wellness tourism boom, strong European market engagement, and resilience in both hotel performance and cruise arrivals positioning the island for long-term growth.

As the global tourism landscape faces ongoing uncertainties, Koh Samui’s steady recovery and growth offer a model for sustainable success in the hospitality industry.
