Italy unveils Genoa Airport’s new East Wing, a €15M upgrade boosting capacity, comfort, and travel connectivity for up to 3 million passengers annually.
Genoa Airport Enters a New Chapter with Launch of Modern East Wing
Genoa Airport is embracing a major transformation with the grand opening of its new East Wing on March 19, marking the beginning of an ambitious redevelopment plan. The expansion, which represents an investment of €15 million and 18 months of work, significantly enhances the airport’s capacity and passenger experience.
Expanded Capacity and Upgraded Facilities
Spanning 5,500 square metres, the East Wing includes 550 square metres dedicated to a revamped commercial zone featuring a Duty-Free shop and a multi-product retail outlet. With this development, Genoa’s Cristoforo Colombo Airport can now accommodate up to three million passengers annually. This milestone also serves as the first phase of a broader overhaul, with a further €12.6 million planned over the next 12 to 18 months to reshape the entire terminal by the end of 2026.
The East Wing introduces cutting-edge features, including four new security lanes with state-of-the-art automated baggage screening systems, three additional boarding gates, 250 passenger seats (with one-third offering power outlets), and a fully climate-controlled boarding pier complete with lift access to the apron.
More Space, More Services, More Comfort
Once the full redevelopment is complete, the terminal’s total floor area will expand to 20,000 square metres—an increase of 38%. Retail space will grow to 1,200 square metres, and the number of check-in desks will nearly double from 12 to 22. The boarding gate count will increase to 10, including three within the newly launched wing. Aircraft parking bays at the terminal will also grow to eight, and a new airport lounge will span 200 square metres, representing a 50% boost in size.
A Rail Connection to the Sky
Beyond the terminal, Genoa Airport is poised to benefit from a broader infrastructure push totaling nearly €80 million. One of the cornerstone projects is the new Genova Aeroporto railway station, which will feature a pedestrian walkway equipped with a moving walkway. This will allow travelers to reach the terminal from the station in just six minutes, seamlessly connecting the airport to the regional and national rail network.
Together, these investments are setting the stage for a new era in travel and connectivity for Genoa, reinforcing its role as a key transport hub in northern Italy.
