IndiGo Airlines has established itself as the world’s second-fastest-growing airline based on seat capacity growth. In 2024, the airline saw a remarkable 10.1% increase in seat capacity, reaching a total of over 134.9 million seats. This impressive growth places IndiGo just behind Qatar Airways, which achieved a slightly higher 10.4% growth in the same metric, as reported by the latest data from the Official Airline Guide (OAG).
Furthermore, IndiGo has also secured the top spot for the fastest growth in flight frequency globally. The airline’s flight frequency surged by 9.7% year-on-year in 2024, with a total of 749,156 flights recorded. These figures underscore IndiGo’s remarkable expansion and solidify its position as a key player in the global aviation industry.
According to OAG, IndiGo boasts one of the largest aircraft orders globally, with over 900 planes on order. Additionally, the airline received 58 new Airbus aircraft in 2024, marking it as the largest recipient of these deliveries. However, the report also highlights that approximately 80 of IndiGo’s aircraft remain inactive due to maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) supply chain challenges.
While a significant 88% of IndiGo’s capacity is directed toward domestic routes, the airline is strategically focusing on expanding its international presence. In 2024, its growth efforts were particularly concentrated on regional markets in the Middle East and Thailand.
IndiGo’s long-term goals include the expansion of long-haul, low-cost services. The airline is exploring the possibility of accelerating its launch plans, with wet lease aircraft earmarked for introduction in 2025.
For the October-December quarter of the current financial year, which concludes on March 31, 2025, IndiGo reported a net profit of Rs 2,449 crore. This marked an 18% decline compared to the same period last year. Despite the drop in profit, the airline saw a 14% rise in its revenue from operations, which reached Rs 22,111 crore for the quarter.
IndiGo reported a total income of Rs 22,992.8 crore for the quarter, reflecting a 14.6% growth compared to the same period last year.
The airline’s total expenses for the quarter amounted to Rs 20,465.7 crore, which marked a 19.9% increase year-on-year.
IndiGo’s Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 0.7% to Rs 5,178.6 crore compared to the previous year.
The airline’s load factor for the quarter reached 86.9%, up from 85.8% during the same period in the prior year.
