IHG Hotels & Resorts and GI Capital have joined forces to develop Regent Kyoto, a landmark luxury hotel set to open in 2028. This collaboration aims to create an exceptional destination that seamlessly blends Regent’s signature opulence with Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage and timeless elegance. By revitalizing a historic garden and honoring traditional artistry, the project promises guests an unparalleled experience of refined comfort and authentic Japanese sophistication, positioning Regent Kyoto as a new benchmark in luxury hospitality.

IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG), collaborating with GI Capital Management, has recently marked the commencement of construction for the highly anticipated Regent Kyoto. Expected to open its doors in 2028, this new property aims to redefine modern luxury by seamlessly integrating deep cultural traditions with stunning architectural creativity.

The hotel is centered around a historic garden, originally designed over 100 years ago by the celebrated landscape artist Kumakichi Kato, whose legacy has been carefully preserved and rejuvenated. Regent Kyoto will offer guests an extraordinary stay with 83 elegantly appointed rooms, premium facilities, and an unmatched level of refinement.

Situated in Okazaki, one of Kyoto’s most prestigious neighborhoods famed for its historic villas, the hotel occupies a location steeped in history. The property also houses Tsuruya, a celebrated ‘ryotei’ restaurant renowned as one of Kyoto’s culinary gems. With a legacy spanning over 100 years, Tsuruya has served distinguished visitors including members of the Japanese aristocracy, the imperial family, and visiting dignitaries. Iconic landmarks such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzen-ji Temple are conveniently within walking distance.

The design of the guest rooms will incorporate a contemporary take on the traditional ‘engawa’—a veranda-like space by the window—allowing guests to unwind while enjoying uninterrupted views of the serene gardens and natural surroundings. This seamless fusion of architectural heritage and modern elegance embodies Regent’s signature ethos of tranquility, refined grandeur, and understated luxury.

James Lee, Managing Partner / CEO, GI Capital Management Ltd., said: “The groundbreaking ceremony is a special day for the team and a wonderful milestone for Kyoto. We are proud to bring the Regent brand to life, reflecting the timeless beauty of Kyoto, in this serene, beautiful and historic location in partnership with IHG.

“Complementing Kyoto’s cultural and historical legacy, we are creating a truly special experience that redefines the meaning of luxury in this remarkable city.”

Abhijay Sandilya, CEO of IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan and Managing Director of IHG Hotels & Resorts Japan & Micronesia, said: “It’s wonderful to see the momentum behind upper luxury brand Regent globally, and today we celebrate another exciting chapter for Regent following the groundbreaking in Kyoto, the cultural capital of Japan.
