Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is set to usher in a new era of enhanced passenger experience and operational efficiency with the phased launch of its expanded Terminal 2 (T2), beginning on 23 September 2025. This major infrastructure milestone marks a significant step forward in HKIA’s commitment to meeting rising passenger demand, improving connectivity, and reinforcing its status as a global aviation hub.
Coach Hall Launch to Ease Congestion at Terminal 1
The very first passenger-focused facility to open at the newly expanded T2 will be the indoor Coach Hall, designed to streamline ground transport logistics. The hall features forty-one dedicated parking bays for a wide range of transport services, including tour buses, cross-boundary coaches, limousines, and resident coaches.
In line with this development, the existing ticketing counters and boarding areas for cross-boundary coaches and limousines — currently spread between Terminal 1 and Car Park 4 — will be relocated to the new Coach Hall in T2. Similarly, the boarding bays for tour buses, previously operating from Car Park 1, will also be moved to T2. These changes are aimed at alleviating vehicular congestion around Terminal 1, particularly during peak hours, while freeing up space at Car Park 1 to accommodate growing user demand.
Departure Facilities to Follow in 2026
Following the successful opening of the Coach Hall in September 2025, HKIA has outlined a clear roadmap for further phased operations at Terminal 2. In the early second quarter of 2026, passengers can expect the unveiling of new departure facilities, including modern check-in counters and related processing areas.
The introduction of these services will significantly reduce pressure on Terminal 1 and improve the flow of departing passengers. As each segment of the new terminal becomes operational, remaining passenger facilities — such as baggage claim areas, customs clearance points, lounges, and arrival halls — will be progressively introduced in subsequent phases.
Operational Readiness and Staff Preparedness in Full Swing
To ensure a seamless transition and smooth operations, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is working closely with a wide array of stakeholders. These include various government departments, airlines, passenger handling agents, and transport operators, all of whom play critical roles in terminal operations. AAHK has initiated extensive preparatory measures that include comprehensive training, familiarisation programs, and simulation exercises for frontline and support staff.
In addition to training, drills and emergency response rehearsals are being conducted to evaluate contingency protocols and guarantee that all teams are fully equipped to manage various operational scenarios efficiently and safely.
Fully Functional Terminal 2 Will Support Both Arrivals and Departures
Once fully commissioned, the expanded T2 will offer comprehensive services for both arriving and departing passengers. It has been designed to support HKIA’s ambitious Three-Runway System (3RS), which became operational in November 2024. The 3RS has significantly increased the airport’s capacity, necessitating the expansion of supporting infrastructure such as Terminal 2.
By expanding T2, HKIA is not only future-proofing its passenger handling capabilities, but also positioning itself to capture a larger share of global aviation traffic. As international travel rebounds and demand for seamless travel experiences continues to rise, the new terminal will serve as a cornerstone for operational excellence, passenger comfort, and international competitiveness.
