Hong Kong Airlines has launched a new direct flight between Hong Kong and Sydney, Australia, further expanding its international network and enhancing travel options for business and leisure passengers. This new route is a significant development for the airline, which becomes the second local carrier to operate this popular service, increasing connectivity between Hong Kong and one of Australia’s major economic and cultural hubs.
This latest service is part of Hong Kong Airlines’ strategy to broaden its global reach and cater to the growing demand for air travel between the two cities. The flight, operated by the airline’s Airbus A330 aircraft, offers passengers a comfortable and efficient way to travel between Hong Kong and Sydney, with both business and economy class options available.
To mark the launch, Hong Kong Airlines hosted special events at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Sydney Airport (SYD). The ceremony at HKIA, held just before the inaugural flight, was attended by representatives from various sectors, including tourism, aviation, and government. The event saw passengers receiving unique commemorative gifts, marking the historic occasion.
“We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new direct service to Sydney, which is a key milestone in our ongoing growth as an international airline,” said a representative from Hong Kong Airlines. “Sydney is an important destination for both tourism and business, and this new route will provide more travel options for passengers flying between Hong Kong and Australia. As always, we remain dedicated to delivering outstanding service, ensuring a premium experience for our customers on every flight.”
The airline’s Airbus A330, which operates the Hong Kong-Sydney route, offers passengers a superior flying experience. With its spacious cabins and high-quality amenities, the A330 ensures travelers are comfortable throughout the long-haul flight. The aircraft provides a blend of premium services, including fine dining options and attentive staff, designed to make the journey as enjoyable as possible for passengers in both business and economy classes.
Upon arrival in Sydney, flight HX017 was greeted with a traditional water cannon salute, a fitting tribute to the airline’s new service. The welcome ceremony also featured participation from officials representing the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Sydney, as well as Destination NSW and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office. These representatives celebrated the enhanced connectivity between the two cities, emphasizing the positive impact the new route will have on travel and trade.
Exclusive Lounge Access for Connecting Passengers
To celebrate the new Sydney service, Hong Kong Airlines is offering complimentary lounge access to passengers traveling on the Hong Kong-Sydney route who are connecting to other Hong Kong Airlines flights. From June 20 to October 31, 2025, passengers transiting through Hong Kong International Airport to select destinations—including Vancouver, Tokyo, Osaka, Bali, Shanghai (Pudong), Haikou, and Sanya—will have access to the airline’s premium “Club Autus” lounge. This special benefit provides travelers with a comfortable space to relax and enjoy enhanced services while waiting for their connecting flights.
Expanding Hong Kong Airlines’ International Reach
The launch of the Sydney route is part of Hong Kong Airlines’ broader efforts to increase its presence on the global stage. In addition to Sydney, the airline has introduced or reinstated several key routes in 2025, including flights to Vancouver in Canada, Gold Coast in Australia, and Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia, China. These new routes reflect the airline’s dedication to offering more diverse travel options for its passengers, strengthening its international network and contributing to the recovery of global aviation.
The airline has also increased the frequency of its popular routes to meet rising demand, particularly during peak travel seasons. Hong Kong Airlines has resumed seasonal services to the Maldives and increased its daily flights to Da Nang, which now operates twice a day. Additionally, the airline has ramped up its services to Shanghai Pudong, with four flights per day, and added more daily flights to Hangzhou and Nanjing. These frequency increases provide greater flexibility for passengers and offer more convenient flight options for travelers.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future for Hong Kong Airlines
Hong Kong Airlines continues to prioritize service quality and network growth, ensuring a premium travel experience for passengers across its expanding range of international destinations. The launch of the Hong Kong-Sydney route is just the beginning of the airline’s ambitious expansion plans, as it strives to meet the evolving needs of global travelers. With a modern fleet, exceptional in-flight services, and an increasing number of destinations, Hong Kong Airlines is poised for long-term success in the competitive international aviation market.
As the airline continues to grow its global footprint, the new Sydney service represents an important step in solidifying its position as a key player in international air travel. With more new routes and services on the horizon, Hong Kong Airlines is set to enhance connectivity and offer more travel options to its passengers in the years to come.
