Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline, is on the right track to actualize its “Vision 2035” strategic roadmap, which calls for the company to become the most competitive and leading aviation group in six areas of its business by 2025 and the airline of choice by 2035. CEO Mesfin Tasew has recently spoken about the airline’s successful approach in implementing this holistic strategy, which focuses on delivering safe, customer-focused and market-driven services across the entirety of his airline’s operations.

Other services provided by the airline include passenger and cargo transport, helicopter services, AIrcraft Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO), aviation training, airport management, and travel help through its travel and tourism services (AI (Other Services). As the airline expands, its ultimate ambition is to become a leader in the world aviation ecosystem, recognized for innovation as well as operational excellence.

“In our vision 2025, we aspire to become the most competitive and leading aviation group in Africa, while the company charted long-term growth plan and has been striving towards its implementation,” said Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group, “Accordingly, we are now providing convenient options to the traveling public on our expanding network, adding value, comfort, and choice to their travel experience. We will continue to expand, reinforce our cornerstone: the business in Africa, and further boost our presence in the market.”

Network Expansion and New Destinations

Key to the strategy of Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its network. In the last couple of years, the airline has been consistently announcing new cities across the country. In addition to these, as part of the Airline’s larger expansion plan new routes such as Sharjah (UAE), Hyderabad (India), Oporto (Portugal) and Hanoi (Vietnam) have also launched says Mesfin. The airline remains committed to providing diversification on its international routes, in order to reach new and profitable markets, he says.

The fact that the carrier is committed to enhancing flight frequency to existing destinations also shows the carrier’s dedication to fulfill the increasing air travel demand. Ethiopian Airlines takes a further step in expanding its dramatic rapid growth, consistently improving its capacity in high traffic flows and keeping its competitive edge in popular routes.

New Routes and Expansion Plan

The addition of a new service to Vietnam also underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ continued drive for expansion of its network. Increasing the global footprint of the airline is key to our roadmap and Australia flights is what the airline has been focused on and made a priority, Mesfin added. He said that a feasibility study has also been carried out on this new route. It is intended that Ethiopian Airlines will fully take advantage of the extended Asia-Pacific and Oceania travel destinations market.

FLEET GROWTH: PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Fleet growth is a second central pillar of the Vision 2035 plan for Ethiopian Airlines. It has placed large orders with both Boeing and Airbus to upgrade and grow its fleet. It’s worth mentioning that Ethiopian Airlines has already placed order of about 120 aircraft including Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the latest 777X, and are slated to enhance the capacity of the Airline to satisfy the much growing travel needs and optimise operating cost.”

In addition to its Boeing orders, Ethiopian has also bought a large number of Airbus A350s, the other leading-edge new aircraft that fits the airline’s low emissions standards. These modern fuel-efficient aircraft will help Ethiopian Airline reduce its environmental practices as well as facilitate its operation.

Ethiopian Airlines is also taking Boeing 737 MAX jets, two of the more advanced planes having been delivered as recently as last month. The airline also has several units on order to replace older aircraft in its fleet. This new aircraft will help Ethiopian Airlines to contribute in the reduction of its carbon footprint, which in turn will be good to the environment.

Expanding the Regional Fleet

Ethiopian Airlines also plans to add to its regional operations as part of its growing fleet. The airline is now considering options to purchase more 100-seater aircraft to be used for regional and short-haul flights, Mesfin said. This would help the airline extend its market share inside and outside Africa and capture under-served markets.

These smaller jets will offer us the ability to open up new destinations and complement our existing fleet of 777s and 787s. This fleet growth will also support the airline’s further expansion in Africa, where it is the leading aviation group in the continent.

Strategic Partnerships and Joint Ventures

In addition to fleet growth, Ethiopian Airlines is heavily involved in joint ventures and strategic partnerships as it seeks to continue to increase its global footprint. Mesfin said: “We have already established relationships with four foreign airlines and now we are open to make new partnerships at all possibilities in order to expand our network and create synergy.”

Apart from these partnerships, a number of countries have sought the help of Ethiopian Airlines to set up their own national carriers. Ethiopian Airlines usually starts such partnerships with feasibility studies to guarantee the project’s advantage, longevity and mutual interests, according to Mesfin. And with this knowledge, the airline has successfully taken a leadership role within the African aviation industry, not only as an airline, but as a partner in global aviation growth.

A Vision for the Future

Ethiopian Airlines Vision 2035 mirrors the company’s quest to become the worlds leading aviation groupe by connecting Africa with the rest of the world, expanding its fleet, developing its MRO and Others, whilst cooperating with world renowned companies. The airline’s stature within the continent of Africa, in combination with its performance-driven leadership and product offerings will continue to raise the bar for the global aviation industry.

By investing in state-of-the art aircraft, expansion of the frequency of its global network, and the creation of new strategic partnerships with major world airlines, ET has become a model for others in the global airline business to follow. It seems the airline will continue to be one to watch for a good few years as it continues to grow, develop sustainability and continue innovating.

As Ethiopian Airlines works towards realising its vision 2025 strategic road map, there is no doubt that it is not just in the expansion business, but in the business of being a world leader whether in dominance or operations. With stems own excellent network structure, modern fleet, and dedication to customer service, the aircraft is destined for great days that could see it climb to even greater heights within the next decade.
