The Diplomat Beach Resort, Curio Collection by Hilton, has reached a pivotal sustainability achievement with the introduction of its one-of-a-kind reef sculpture, “The Heart of the Ocean.” This artwork is part of the Guardians of the Reef project, a collaborative marine conservation effort spearheaded by Ocean Rescue Alliance International (ORAI) in partnership with the City of Hollywood.
As the exclusive hotel partner in this groundbreaking initiative, The Diplomat has contributed significantly to the installation of fifty reef structures, which include twelve bespoke sculptures and thirty-eight habitat modules. These structures are strategically placed off the coast of Hollywood Beach to promote marine biodiversity and restore natural habitats.
Scheduled to welcome snorkelers and eco-tourists in June 2025, this accessible reef will serve as both a captivating underwater gallery and a flourishing marine ecosystem. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the site, witnessing firsthand the vital role that conservation efforts like this play in protecting and enhancing ocean ecosystems.
“At The Diplomat, we noticed that today’s travelers care deeply about not only their stay but also leaving a positive impact on the destinations where they’re travelling,” said Dean Lane, general manager, The Diplomat. “We’re proud to sponsor this project and contribute a sculpture that both enhances the coastline and symbolizes our long-term commitment to our local environment and the greater Hollywood community. By helping to create a snorkel-friendly reef destination, we’re working to support Hollywood tourism and create a positive environmental impact the community will appreciate for years to come.”
The Diplomat Beach Resort has demonstrated its dedication to preserving South Florida’s coastal ecosystems through substantial contributions to marine conservation efforts. This support was made possible by a $30,000 donation from the Hilton Global Foundation, Hilton’s philanthropic initiative, alongside a direct contribution of $4,500 from the resort itself.
This collaboration aligns with Hilton’s broader sustainability framework, “Travel with Purpose,” which is designed to promote responsible tourism and create lasting environmental and social benefits. Through this program, Hilton strives to make a positive impact across its global operations, supply chains, and local communities, with the goal of advancing sustainable practices within the hospitality sector.
By backing the Guardians of the Reef project, The Diplomat Beach Resort and Hilton are not only playing an active role in preserving marine biodiversity but also setting a powerful example for the hospitality industry in embracing a future centered around environmental responsibility.
“At Hilton, we believe hospitality can be a powerful force for good, and we’re proud of The Diplomat Beach Resort’s leadership,” said Katherine Lugar, EVP, Corporate Affairs and President, Hilton Global Foundation. “This impressive project, in collaboration with partners like Ocean Rescue Alliance International, will enhance the guest experience while also creating meaningful, lasting impact for their communities.”
In collaboration with the City of Hollywood and marine artists and biologists from ORAI, The Diplomat Beach Resort introduces the “Heart of the Ocean” sculpture, a powerful symbol of love, resilience, and the regeneration of our oceans. Crafted using marine-safe concrete and Coral Lok technology, this innovative piece not only enhances coral growth but also serves as a captivating focal point along the resort’s new reef trail.
Located in shallow waters—between 10 and 15 feet deep—near North Beach Park, Harry Berry Park, and Keating Park, the reef trail is envisioned as a “living museum beneath the waves.” The trail features an array of sculptures depicting marine life, ocean deities, and interactive selfie stations. Visitors can explore the area with the help of QR codes and educational signage, making the experience both educational and accessible for locals and tourists alike.
This installation is just one of many initiatives designed to further The Diplomat’s commitment to marine conservation. Guests can also get involved through the resort’s “Cocktails for Corals” program, which supports reef restoration efforts, engage in marine conservation education via the Kids Club, and look forward to upcoming dive excursions—all creating unique opportunities for guests to actively contribute to ocean preservation during their stay.
“The Heart of the Ocean reef sculpture is more than a symbol—it’s a living legacy of love, resilience, and environmental stewardship,” said Dr. Shelby Thomas, Founder & CEO of Ocean Rescue Alliance International. “We are proud to partner with The Diplomat Beach Resort and the City of Hollywood to bring this vision to life beneath the waves. Together, we are transforming our coastlines through art and science, creating immersive underwater experiences that restore marine habitats and inspire the world to protect what we love.”- Dr. Shelby Thomas
The installation of the Guardians of the Reef occurred from May 22 to 23, 2025, through a collaborative effort involving the City of Hollywood, Broward County, SeaKeepers International, and Making Waves Productions.
