More than 6,900 flights were cancelled and delayed across the US in a single day as a powerful storm system swept through key travel corridors, crippling operations for major airlines including Delta, JetBlue, American, Air Canada, United, Aeroméxico, and Caribbean Airlines. The severe weather outbreak—marked by low visibility, lightning risks, and rapid storm cell formation—paralyzed air traffic at critical hubs such as Atlanta, JFK, Reagan National, Dallas-Fort Worth, and over a dozen other major airports. Carriers scrambled to reroute aircraft, reposition crews, and assist stranded travelers as cascading delays spread from coast to coast. With airports overwhelmed and ground operations suspended intermittently, the entire U.S. travel sector entered a state of gridlock, marking one of the most widespread one-day flight disruptions of the year.

The wave of disruption — driven by a powerful cocktail of thunderstorms, low-visibility systems, and unstable air masses — created ripple effects that paralyzed the U.S. travel sector during one of the peak summer weekends.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport – Chicago, Illinois

Chicago O’Hare bore the brunt of the nationwide storm meltdown, with a staggering 533 flights delayed and 53 cancelled within just 24 hours. The disruptions began early as severe low-pressure fronts and convective storm bands drifted through the Midwest, triggering hours-long ground holds. American Airlines, with one of its strongest operational presences at O’Hare, cancelled 32 flights and delayed over 130 more. SkyWest Airlines, serving regional routes for multiple carriers, added over 100 additional delays.

The storm’s unpredictable intensity forced air traffic controllers to space out departures and restrict runway access, pushing turnaround times to a crawl. Passengers reported spending upwards of four hours inside grounded planes. Families were separated across connections, and entire business trips collapsed under the delays. Even international carriers like Lufthansa and EVA Air were caught in the gridlock, contributing to long-haul confusion as arrival gates turned into parking lots.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport – Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte’s Douglas International Airport descended into complete disorder as 515 flights were delayed and 39 cancelled, mostly concentrated in the afternoon and evening wave. American Airlines, which maintains one of its primary hubs in Charlotte, saw more than 250 departures affected. Their regional partners, including PSA Airlines, Piedmont, and Envoy Air, were hit with operational freezes, including 18 outright cancellations by PSA alone.

As clouds rolled in and visibility dropped below FAA minimums, inbound flights circled or diverted, while outbound jets sat idle awaiting airspace clearance. Terminals overflowed with rebooking lines that stretched for hundreds of feet. Passengers unable to find hotel rooms resorted to sleeping in concourses. American’s app and gate agents were overwhelmed as frustrated travelers sought answers amid widespread delay notifications that changed by the minute.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport – Atlanta, Georgia

At the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, travelers faced another grueling day as 337 flights were delayed and 19 cancelled, straining the capacity of both Delta’s domestic operations and international flow. Delta Air Lines, headquartered in Atlanta, reported delays to nearly half its afternoon schedule, including major business routes to New York, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Its feeder carrier, Endeavor Air, logged over 40 additional delays.

The situation grew tense as thunderstorms rapidly built over Georgia’s air corridor. Several flights were forced to abort takeoff, while ground crew operations were suspended for safety during multiple lightning alerts. Security lines grew to two-hour waits as passengers whose flights were rescheduled flocked to different concourses. Onboard, passengers described being “trapped on the tarmac” for hours before pilots could get updated departure slots.

John F. Kennedy International Airport – New York, New York

New York’s JFK was slammed with 279 delays and 63 cancellations, sending shockwaves through the city’s international flight schedule. JetBlue, one of the primary carriers operating out of JFK’s Terminal 5, faced intense pressure with 17 cancellations and over 60 delays, especially on short-haul northeast routes and Florida-bound flights. Meanwhile, Republic Airways and Endeavor Air also halted dozens of regional connections, creating a domino effect through the Mid-Atlantic.

Operations came to a standstill during several weather bursts, particularly during peak international arrival times. European and Latin American carriers were forced to hold at departure airports or reroute. The combination of air traffic control delays, lightning suspensions, and reduced visibility had airline dispatch teams scrambling to rearrange aircraft and crew schedules. Inside terminals, overwhelmed flight monitors flashed a wave of red statuses, triggering a wave of customer service meltdowns and cascading rebookings.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport – Washington, D.C.

Reagan National faced one of the worst flight cancellations in the country, with 279 delays and a crippling 91 cancellations in a single day. That’s nearly a fifth of its total scheduled operations wiped out. The airport’s compact runway layout and restricted approach paths made it extremely vulnerable as storms pushed through the mid-Atlantic.

PSA Airlines, which operates dozens of short-haul flights from Reagan, cancelled 61 flights outright. American Airlines also took a serious blow, while Republic and Envoy Air suspended operations on their regional jets as the tarmac became unworkable. The disruptions were so severe that outbound flights to neighboring cities like Richmond and Philadelphia were scrapped entirely. Travelers described the experience as “total paralysis,” with concourse corridors jammed wall-to-wall and rental car lines backing up into parking garages.

Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport – Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas

DFW International reported 468 flight delays and 15 cancellations, hitting both long-haul and regional travelers. With American Airlines operating its largest hub here, the carrier recorded over 300 delays by late afternoon, especially on eastbound routes connecting to storm-affected regions. Its partner airlines, including PSA, Envoy, and SkyWest, were all severely impacted, some seeing average delays exceeding 90 minutes.

As heavy cloud bands moved across North Texas, lightning strikes in the vicinity led to multiple airport-wide ramp closures. Ground crews were pulled back, cargo transfers halted, and baggage operations suspended temporarily. Several flights scheduled to depart in early afternoon didn’t leave until after nightfall. Inside, frustration mounted among connecting passengers, many of whom missed tight links to international flights heading to Europe, South America, and Asia.

George Bush Intercontinental Airport – Houston, Texas

Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental faced a crushing day of disruption, recording 223 delays and an alarming 47 cancellations. The storm system brought heavy cloud cover and rotating cells that repeatedly stalled operations at one of United Airlines’ largest hubs. United itself was responsible for 32 cancellations, many tied to regional routes through the southern U.S. and Latin America.

Operations slowed to a crawl as CommuteAir and Mesa Airlines, both United regional partners, were hit with ground halts. Passenger queues spilled from terminal corridors as weather and ground control conditions shifted unpredictably throughout the day. Delays affected not only domestic hubs like Denver, Chicago, and Miami, but also international routes to Mexico and South America. Dozens of missed connections prompted overnight rebookings and hotel vouchers ran out by mid-evening.

LaGuardia Airport – New York, New York

New York’s LaGuardia Airport experienced an avalanche of delays, logging 413 flights delayed and 14 cancellations during the storm cycle. Known for its limited runway space and dense Northeast Corridor traffic, LaGuardia became gridlocked almost instantly as the storm hovered over the New York metro.

Southwest Airlines took the brunt of the delays, with more than 70% of its schedule delayed. Republic, Endeavor, and JetBlue also faced heavy setbacks. With gate space at a premium and no room for plane repositioning, some aircraft remained on the tarmac for hours, further stacking up the flight queue. Terminal B, overwhelmed with passengers scrambling to find food, power outlets, or updates, resembled a storm shelter more than an airport by late afternoon.

Newark Liberty International Airport – Newark, New Jersey

Newark Liberty faced relentless pressure, with 270 delays and 59 flight cancellations, much of it tied to United Airlines, its dominant operator at the airport. United cancelled 10 flights and delayed more than 100, but regional partners Republic, GoJet, and Jazz Aviation also suffered severe setbacks.

The Port Authority issued congestion advisories as taxi queues backed up onto terminal roads and baggage claim areas filled with unclaimed luggage. Thunderstorms hovered throughout the day, forcing the FAA to intermittently pause arrivals from surrounding airspace. With delays averaging two hours and growing, many passengers missed long-haul links, especially to Europe and South America.

Boston Logan International Airport – Boston, Massachusetts

Boston Logan was swept up in the widespread storm disruption, reporting 197 delays and 14 cancellations. JetBlue, a major player in Boston, delayed nearly 50 flights, while American, Republic, and Spirit each reported dozens more. The city’s coastal conditions and fog-prone weather combined with the storm to create severe arrival slowdowns.

Multiple carriers, including Cape Air, Boutique Air, and even international names like Turkish Airlines and Cathay Pacific, were forced to adjust operations or cancel service altogether. Travelers heading to the Midwest and East Coast were especially affected as Logan’s runway backlog reached peak capacity by evening. Inside, restlessness grew as updates trickled in slowly and rebookings pushed into 48-hour windows.

Philadelphia International Airport – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Philadelphia reported 302 delays and 30 cancellations, mostly centered around American Airlines and its regional affiliate PSA Airlines, which together accounted for more than 140 disrupted flights. Piedmont, another regional operator, saw over 50% of its schedule delayed, including short-haul runs across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia.

The airport’s heavy reliance on regional aircraft meant that storm-related turbulence and wind shear grounded multiple aircraft types. The FAA imposed intermittent ground stops, especially during the evening peak, which created a ripple effect across nearby hubs like D.C. and New York. By nightfall, multiple gates were double-assigned, and flights continued to board hours after their originally scheduled departures.

Orlando International Airport – Orlando, Florida

At Orlando International, what began as a typical summer rush turned chaotic as 229 flights were delayed and 10 cancelled, leaving both tourists and locals in limbo. JetBlue, Delta, and American Airlines were the most heavily impacted, particularly on routes to New York, Boston, and Chicago.

Travelers reported boarding, deboarding, and reboarding the same flight multiple times due to shifting runway and weather clearance statuses. Even theme park-goers, expecting seamless returns, found themselves stuck in terminals with restless kids and rescheduled plans. Flight monitors constantly flickered with updated ETAs that never held, while rebooking desks remained flooded into the early morning.

Tampa International Airport – Tampa, Florida

Tampa experienced 120 delays and 11 cancellations, as heavy rains rolled through the Gulf region and led to on-the-ground halts. American Airlines suffered the highest disruption volume, followed by Southwest, JetBlue, and Spirit. Afternoon flights bore the brunt of the delays, with ripple effects impacting evening departures across the eastern seaboard.

The airport’s normally smooth operations buckled under weather volatility, as gate agents raced to reroute passengers and consolidate flights. Some outbound aircraft were grounded before boarding even began, and several inbound flights diverted to Orlando or Miami. Frustration peaked as queues snaked into baggage claim zones, and luggage was left unclaimed overnight.

Raleigh–Durham International Airport – Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina

Raleigh–Durham was one of the hardest-hit smaller hubs, with 96 delays and a stunning 17 cancellations. PSA Airlines, a major regional operator for American, cancelled five flights, while Republic, Endeavor, and Jazz added to the growing list. Despite being a midsize airport, RDU saw severe operational breakdowns that echoed through hubs like Charlotte and Philadelphia.

The airport saw cascading effects as downline connections failed to recover. Some travelers reported being stuck on tarmacs for 45 minutes or more, only to be sent back to the gate. Ground crew shortages compounded the delays, with refueling, catering, and baggage services falling out of sync with the rescheduled departure waves.

San Francisco International Airport – San Francisco, California

Though located far from the storm epicenter, San Francisco International Airport still faced 129 delays and 11 cancellations, largely due to aircraft positioning issues and residual delays from inbound flights. United, American, and Alaska Airlines saw the worst of it, as weather delays elsewhere caused cascading scheduling collapses in the Bay Area.

Long-haul international services were also impacted. British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, and Air New Zealand each recorded delays, with some flights arriving hours behind schedule due to missed connecting crews or rerouted aircraft. Domestic travelers, particularly those heading east, were advised to expect extended delays and overnight stays.

Seattle–Tacoma International Airport – Seattle, Washington

Seattle-Tacoma saw 204 delays and 7 cancellations, affecting carriers across the board — especially Alaska Airlines, which delayed nearly 90 flights. Delta, American, and United also logged multi-hour setbacks, particularly on routes headed to the Midwest and East Coast.

The airport’s operations slowed significantly due to aircraft arriving late from storm-impacted cities. This ripple effect caused terminal congestion and pushed some red-eye flights into the early morning. Passengers on transcontinental routes reported frequent gate changes and boarding announcements that led nowhere as airline staff scrambled to juggle crew availability and aircraft swaps.

Denver International Airport – Denver, Colorado

Denver reported 207 delays and 11 cancellations, largely driven by afternoon wind bursts and an unexpected line of rain showers. United Airlines, with a large hub at Denver, delayed 63 flights, while Southwest, Frontier, and American followed closely behind with dozens more.

Multiple arrival banks were backed up, and connecting passengers were forced to sprint between concourses due to gate changes and late-arriving flights. Airlines rerouted aircraft from smaller airports to maintain mainline operations, leaving regional destinations like Aspen and Bozeman underserved for hours. Delays spilled into the evening and caused departure waves to stack upon each other, creating bottlenecks at runway hold points.

St. Louis Lambert International Airport – St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis saw 84 delays and 8 cancellations, a modest number but enough to create confusion for passengers expecting a calm travel day. The weather front hit the Midwest hard and forced regional carriers like Republic, SkyWest, and Jazz to delay or cancel numerous short-hop connections. Southwest Airlines, operating many of the routes in and out of Lambert, was also heavily delayed.

Runway visibility dropped periodically, and the airport’s older gate layout made aircraft rotations difficult once the schedule slipped. Several aircraft were forced to wait for open gates upon arrival, leading to tarmac waits and late-night connections being missed.

Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport – Minneapolis, Minnesota

Minneapolis logged 102 delays and 14 cancellations, largely tied to Delta Air Lines, which dominates operations at the airport. Delta cancelled six flights and delayed over 30, while Sun Country Airlines and American also struggled to keep pace with inbound delays from the East Coast.

By midday, the airport began stacking up late departures, especially those bound for New York, D.C., and Charlotte. As thunderstorms slowly moved north, aircraft arriving from Florida and Georgia encountered turbulence and wind shear, leading to even more delays. The airport operated past midnight to accommodate rescheduled routes and crew repositioning efforts.

Nashville International Airport – Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville rounded out the storm-hit network with 188 delays and 7 cancellations. Southwest Airlines dominated the disruption count with over 100 delayed flights, while American, Republic, and SkyWest followed. A wave of weather from the Mississippi Valley led to a messy afternoon of extended holds and diverted aircraft.

With Nashville’s summer concert and tourism scene in full swing, terminals were packed with families and large tour groups. Gate changes were announced repeatedly, and even once-boarded passengers were told to deplane multiple times. The ripple effects extended through the evening, with passengers rebooked on flights 24 hours later.

Over 6,900 flights were cancelled and delayed across the US as major airlines including Delta, JetBlue, American, Air Canada, United, Aeroméxico, and Caribbean Airlines faced a crippling wave of weather-related disruptions at key hubs like Atlanta, JFK, Reagan, and Dallas. A powerful storm system paralyzed airport operations nationwide, causing widespread delays, ground stops, and operational breakdowns across the travel sector.

Storms Not Over Yet — More Delays Expected

According to AccuWeather, the same storm system is expected to stall over parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing additional rounds of rain and possible flash flooding. The FAA has already warned of ongoing air traffic restrictions, with extended ground stops likely at major airports including Reagan National, JFK, and LaGuardia.

Travelers are urged to check flight status frequently, rebook if possible, and brace for continued turbulence in the air and at the gates.
