On Monday morning, Delhi woke up to significantly cleaner air with the AQI at 65, falling under the “satisfactory” category. Even as Delhiites were enjoying the relatively clean air, Delhi was not untouched by the weather mishap.
Temperature Drop and Heavy Rainfall
A sudden shower along with turning into cold conditions brought down the day temperature further to a pleasant 23.6 degrees Celsius and provided much-needed respite to the people from the sweltering heat. But the showers also led to traffic disruptions, with waterlogging leading to long traffic jams, especially in areas like Connaught Place. The Delhi Police Traffic issued alerts advising to plan travel accordingly. For those who are planning to travel to the airport, the Delhi Airport Authority issued a travel advisory suggesting to take Delhi Metro due to likely delays prompted by the bad weather.
More Rain and Thunderstorms in the Forecast
Thundershowers are also expected to continue over the next couple of days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Jammu and Kashmir is likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning in the next two days, with gusty winds at a maximum speed of 50 km per hour across the region. This weather system, a cyclonic circulation now lying over northern Haryana, has increased moisture influx, due to which a thick cloud cover has remained over Delhi and its adjoining areas. The IMD has advised commuters and residents to be careful while travelling and use only well-constructed roads, especially in waterlogged areas.
Weather Alerts Across Surrounding Regions
Besides Delhi, the northeast and east India, particularly Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rains during the next few days. Parts of Uttar Pradesh and western Rajasthan, and the state of Uttarakhand will also be affected. The IMD has also put these areas on yellow alert and asked people to keep themselves updated about weather changes.
Red and Orange Warnings in Madhya Pradesh
Up in the north in Madhya Pradesh, a red alert has been sounded in areas including Shivpuri, Ashoknagar, Guna, Sheopur Kalan, and Mandsaur for heavy rain and thunderstorms. For Gwalior, Bhind, Chhatarpur and Rajgarh an ‘orange’ alert has been issued. In a shocking incident, two sisters drowned in the borewell in Rehti Maholi of Satna in Madhya Pradesh, pointing out how the heavy rains have turned dangerous.
Travel Advisory: Winter’s Wrath Disrupts Air Travel Across the Country
In the current weather and alert status, the IMD has informed that operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport could be affected. The Delhi Airport Authority issued a weather advisory statement early on Monday morning, informing about the weather disruptions. The passengers were advised to plan their journey in advance and use alternate modes of transport to reach the airport in case of delays due to the bad weather, the X (earlier Twitter) statement said. “Despite the inclement weather providing for challenging conditions, our ground teams are working around the clock with our stakeholders to ensure operations are running as smoothly as possible,” the airport officials told travelers.
Weather Radar Issues in Delhi
In addition to the weather-related problems, the city is facing operational challenges, too. Doppler weather radars that provide critical weather predictions and aid in managing weather-related disruptions continue to stay grounded in Delhi. While the monsoon continues to batter the city, two of the three Doppler radar units in the capital have been down for nearly two weeks, sending worrying signals to weather experts about the city’s readiness to overcome extreme weather episodes.
Extended Wet Weather in Delhi
With the monsoon advancing leading to rains in some parts of the city, Delhi will feel the weather impact for the next few days. IMD has forecasted rain and thunderstorms in the coming days, keeping the weather wet till July 18 at least. In Noida, located on the outskirts of Delhi, similar conditions prevailed on Monday and the IMD has forecast more downpour through the day.
Commuter Disruptions: Traffic and Waterlog Problems
Delhi’s air quality is currently good but the city has a number of meteorological conditions to battle, which include waterlogging, traffic jams and the impact of cyclonic storms. With monsoons in full swing, for those in Delhi, keeping a tab on weather forecasts and dressing up suitably when stepping out in the rain is suggested. It was evident that the intensity of the monsoon will affect routine life across Delhi-NCR, as a yellow alert was issued for several regions and thunderstorms were reported in many parts.
