IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s largest carrier, is set to implement a major overhaul of its domestic and international flight network for Summer 2025. This realignment, set to take effect in the upcoming season, includes a combination of route expansions and reductions across key metro airports. Bengaluru to Become a Central Hub
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (BLR), one of the busiest in India, will see a substantial increase in flight operations. As India’s technology and startup capital, Bengaluru has experienced a significant rise in air traffic, driven by both business and leisure travel. IndiGo plans to strengthen its presence at BLR with several key updates:
- South India Routes: More daily flights to Madurai (+1), Thiruvananthapuram (+1), Trichy (+1), and Kozhikode (+1).
- Metro Connectivity: Expanded links to Ahmedabad (6 daily, +3 weekly services) and Pune (8 daily, up from 7).
- Domestic Expansion: New services to Patna, Ranchi, Goa-Dabolim, Dehradun, and Coimbatore.
Although these expansions signal growth, the airline will scale back flights to Chennai (from 11 to 9 daily) and Hyderabad (from 12 to 11 daily), a reflection of its strategy to fine-tune network performance.
Hyderabad Strengthens Domestic Links
Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) in Hyderabad, a growing hub for IT and pharmaceuticals, will also see a surge in domestic flights as part of IndiGo’s Summer 2025 plans. Hyderabad’s increasing role in domestic travel is supported by the airline’s adjustments, which include:
- Metro Connections: More flights to Ahmedabad (6 daily, +3 weekly services) and Pune (5 daily, +1 daily).
- Expansion to Tier-2 Cities: Increased frequencies to Bhopal, Coimbatore, and Pune.
- Regional Routes: New services to Jagdalpur, Jabalpur, Dehradun, and Chandigarh.
However, the airline will scale back services to Chennai (from 12 to 10 daily), Bengaluru (from 12 to 11 daily), and Kolkata (from 7 to 6 daily), which aligns with shifts in passenger demand patterns.
Chennai’s International Focus Amid Domestic Reductions
Chennai International Airport (MAA), a vital gateway for flights to Southeast Asia and the Middle East, will undergo both expansions and reductions in the upcoming summer schedule. Key changes for Chennai include:
- International Expansion: IndiGo will launch daily flights to Kuwait City, enhancing its Gulf network. Additionally, there will be a third daily service to Kozhikode and more flights to Tuticorin and Ahmedabad.
- Domestic Cuts: There will be a significant reduction in flights to Bengaluru, along with cuts on routes to Hyderabad, Port Blair, and Jaipur.
These shifts reflect IndiGo’s strategic move to strengthen international connectivity while fine-tuning its domestic service offerings.
Kolkata’s Mixed Bag of Gains and Reductions
Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU), a critical hub for eastern India and the Northeast, will experience a blend of route additions and reductions. Notable changes include:
- New Additions: A sixth daily flight to Agartala and additional weekly services to Itanagar and Ahmedabad.
- Domestic Reductions: Cuts in services to Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, and Patna. Additionally, IndiGo will reduce its weekly flights to Bangkok from 11 to 7.
Despite these reductions, Kolkata remains an important regional hub for IndiGo, and these adjustments reflect the airline’s focus on balancing demand while maintaining solid growth in the region.
Enhancing International Reach
IndiGo is making significant strides in expanding its international presence for Summer 2025. The airline will increase its global network to 40 destinations, with several exciting new routes, including:
- Seychelles: A new direct service from Mumbai to Seychelles, operating four times a week starting March 22, 2025.
- Krabi: Daily flights from both Mumbai and Bengaluru, beginning March 23 and March 30, 2025, respectively.
- Tiruchirappalli to Jaffna: A new daily flight, marking a key expansion into South Asia.
Other additions include a resumption of daily Chennai-Kuwait flights and a second daily service between Mumbai and Dammam. Some routes, such as Mumbai-Kuwait and Hyderabad-Kuwait, will see reductions, but IndiGo’s growing international footprint signals continued expansion and competition in global markets.
