Since its debut in 2014, the Pendolino high-speed train has redefined rail travel in Poland, playing a pivotal role in the development of the country’s high-speed rail network. The introduction of this state-of-the-art train not only improved the quality of the rail service but also led to a transformation in public perception and passenger behavior. With sleek, modern design and the ability to operate at speeds of up to 250 km per hour, Pendolino brought a new era of speed, comfort, and efficiency to Polish rail travel.
The Pendolino’s legacy continues today through its evolution into the Avelia Stream, part of Alstom’s Avelia high-speed family. This transformation is a reflection of Alstom’s commitment to further enhancing its high-speed train offerings while maintaining the quality and reputation that Pendolino has established in Poland and beyond.
Revolutionizing Poland’s Rail Travel Landscape
Before the arrival of Pendolino, Poland’s rail network relied on older, less comfortable EN57 trains, which offered a poor passenger experience. The conditions in these trains, particularly the heating systems, left much to be desired. Passengers often faced extreme temperature conditions, with burning heat in certain compartments and non-existent heating in toilets. This situation prompted many travelers to choose alternative modes of transport, including cars and buses. The Pendolino train, however, brought a dramatic shift in passenger experience. With its modern design, high speed, and comfortable amenities, Pendolino quickly won over the Polish public.
The introduction of Pendolino revolutionized travel between major Polish cities. Travel times were slashed, and passengers could reach destinations like Warsaw, Gdansk, and Silesia in just two and a half hours — a feat that was hard to compete with by car. The quiet and comfortable compartments provided a welcome contrast to the previous trains, and the on-board catering services added an extra layer of luxury that made the travel experience even more enjoyable. As a result, Pendolino became an immediate hit among travelers, with many opting to take the train for the unique experience it offered.
Steady Growth in Passenger Numbers
Before the Pendolino’s introduction, Polish Railways was grappling with stagnating passenger numbers, which hovered around 49 million annually. However, in the years following Pendolino’s launch, passenger numbers saw a dramatic rise, reaching 78 million by the most recent figures. Despite a temporary dip during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rail system’s passenger count has steadily grown, with projections for 2030 expecting a rise to 110 million passengers annually. This surge in ridership is largely attributed to what has come to be known as the “Pendolino effect.” The train has made traveling by rail an appealing alternative to driving, especially for the younger generation, who are increasingly inclined to use trains rather than cars for their long-distance travel.
The Pendolino’s popularity has also contributed to a shift in travel culture. The convenience and comfort of train travel have made it a preferred choice for many, and this shift is evident in the steady growth of rail travel in Poland. Passengers now have access to a modern and efficient means of transportation that meets their needs for speed, comfort, and reliability.
Building the Pendolino Maintenance Infrastructure from Scratch
To support the Pendolino fleet, Alstom faced the challenge of building a dedicated maintenance facility in Poland. Prior to the Pendolino’s arrival, no facilities in the country were equipped to handle high-speed trains. Alstom stepped in and built a state-of-the-art depot in Warsaw, modeled after similar facilities in Italy. This depot, owned by PKP (Polish Railways) but built by Alstom, has become a crucial part of ensuring the Pendolino fleet’s ongoing performance.
Alstom’s commitment to safety and quality in the maintenance of the Pendolino trains has set new standards in Poland’s rail industry. The practices developed by Alstom at the Warsaw depot have not only influenced the customer but also impacted the broader rail network, with many of these safety practices now included in the specifications of future tenders. This level of innovation has established Alstom as a model for railway maintenance in Poland, ensuring that the Pendolino trains operate with exceptional reliability and safety.
Achieving Unmatched Availability and Reliability
The Pendolino’s outstanding performance can be attributed to a combination of meticulous fleet management, advanced maintenance techniques, and cutting-edge technology. Alstom manages the maintenance schedules for each train to ensure that they are optimally staggered. This prevents a situation where a significant portion of the fleet is taken out of service simultaneously, ensuring that trains remain available to meet demand. Each Pendolino is assigned a unique maintenance schedule based on its mileage, allowing for greater flexibility and ensuring that each train can be serviced at different intervals.
In addition to its efficient fleet management, Alstom employs advanced digital tools such as TrainScanner™ and HealthHub™ to monitor the condition of the trains and predict when maintenance will be needed. The TrainScanner uses infrared scanners and cameras to detect issues as the trains enter the depot, providing precise data on the condition of critical components such as the wheelset brakes. This data is then analyzed in HealthHub™, which helps optimize maintenance schedules and improve the reliability of the fleet.
As a result, Pendolino’s availability rate has reached an impressive 97%, and its reliability rate stands at 99%, marking the highest levels of performance ever seen in Poland’s rail industry. These figures underscore the success of Alstom’s approach to maintaining the Pendolino fleet, and they highlight the train’s continued ability to meet the demands of Poland’s growing rail travel market.
A Bright Future for High-Speed Rail in Poland
As Poland continues to expand its high-speed rail network, the legacy of Pendolino remains an integral part of the country’s rail transportation system. The train has set the bar for future high-speed projects, not only in Poland but also in neighboring countries, where similar projects are underway. The success of Pendolino has shown that high-speed rail can provide a viable, sustainable, and efficient alternative to road travel, offering passengers an unparalleled experience in terms of speed, comfort, and reliability.
Looking ahead, Alstom’s evolution of Pendolino into the Avelia Stream represents the next chapter in the development of high-speed rail in Poland and across Europe. With the continued commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, the Avelia Stream is poised to carry on the Pendolino legacy while setting new standards for high-speed rail travel in the years to come.
