A minimum age limit for entry at bars and restaurants is not unheard of. Outlets often do this to ensure that only those at a legal drinking age are served liquor. However, recently, Bliss Caribbean Restaurant in Missouri, USA made headlines for its unique entry rule. In a Facebook post, they wrote, “To ensure a grown and sexy atmosphere, we require all guests to be 30 or older for women and 35 or older for men. This policy helps us maintain a sophisticated environment, uphold our standards, and support the sustainability of our unique ambience.” We speak to industry stakeholders in Kolkata to know more.
‘Enjoying a meal with the whole family is important’
Experts share that it is better to know which places are suitable for different age groups before they go and risk being disappointed. “Kolkata operates on emotions and personal bonding. Food plays a central role in celebrations. So, in Kolkata having age limits for getting into a restaurant is a far-fetched idea. Of course, nightclubs have an age limit and restaurants only serve drinks to those of age but other than that I don’t think the concept of age bar is feasible in this city in terms of entering a restaurant,” says Nikhil Chawla, owner of two eateries in the city. Restaurateur Shiladitya Chaudhury adds, “Dining is an experience which needs to be shared with family and friends irrespective of their age. Enjoying a hearty meal with loved ones in a restaurant is a kind of celebration here. Therefore, restricting the age limit for restaurants in India is not a wise decision.”The concept of entry age limit won’t be feasible in Kolkata. This city has both young and family-oriented crowds stepping out to unwind. Customers opt for fine dining for cozy dinners while young crowds choose party places, sasy restaurateur Debraj Bose.
“Dining in restaurants is an amalgamation of gastronomic mastery with elegant ambience and premium service. The presence of children can make a mere dining experience into a familial celebration. In Kolkata, we encourage multi-generational outings as it’s a part of our cherished culture which brings a family together,” further adds restaurateur Amit Hathiramani.
