Yet, the surge in tourism has exacerbated environmental threats, including deforestation, pollution, and unregulated construction. The impact of human activity—combined with climate change—has already put pressure on Gilgit-Baltistan’s fragile ecosystems.
Recognizing the need for sustainable tourism management, local authorities have introduced several measures to mitigate environmental degradation:
- Tourism Entry Fee: A small charge for tourist vehicles entering the region was implemented earlier this year. The funds are allocated toward waste management and infrastructure improvements in the mountains.
- Mountaineering Permit Fee Hike: The regional government recently imposed a substantial fee increase for mountaineering access to Pakistan’s highest peaks, including K2, the world’s second-tallest mountain. However, a Pakistani court suspended the 300 percent price hike this month after it negatively impacted winter tourism.

- Hiring local drivers and supporting reforestation efforts, such as tree-planting projects to combat deforestation and flooding caused by melting glaciers.
