Soaring above London’s skyline in her most iconic creation, architect Julia Barfield still marvels at how the London Eye has evolved into a defining symbol of the city.
Originally designed to commemorate the millennium in 2000, the giant observation wheel has since become one of the UK’s most popular paid attractions. Annually, approximately 3.5 million visitors take a leisurely 30-minute ride, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views.
From souvenir shop trinkets to street artists’ sketches and countless social media snapshots, the Eye has cemented itself as an iconic part of London’s landscape—almost as recognizable as Big Ben.
Yet, its journey to becoming a beloved landmark was far from guaranteed.
Initially conceived as a short-term installation set to last just five years, the project had already faced rejection in a competition for a millennium landmark design.
Undeterred, the two architects pressed forward, gathering support and pushing ahead with their vision. Determined to bring it to life, they raced against time to complete the structure in the final years leading up to the new millennium.
Observation wheels have become a staple in major cities worldwide, yet the London Eye remains distinctive even today. Its innovative cantilevered design continues to captivate onlookers along the South Bank, where the massive 120-meter-wide structure tilts dramatically over the Thames, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
Creating such a unique structure demanded groundbreaking engineering solutions, including specially crafted curved glass for the capsules, sourced all the way from Venice.
In a remarkable feat of logistics, sections of the wheel were transported up the River Thames, where construction teams worked directly over the water to piece together the massive framework.
Drawing on techniques typically used in assembling North Sea oil rigs, the wheel was carefully lifted into position. However, a major setback struck when the cables unexpectedly detached, forcing an unexpected delay in the project’s completion.
Various technical setbacks pushed back the grand opening, leaving eager visitors waiting a few extra months. However, by March 2000, the London Eye finally opened to the public, joining a collection of modern landmarks that symbolized a fresh chapter for the British capital. Alongside it, the Millennium Dome, the Millennium Bridge, and the Tate Modern gallery stood as testaments to London’s embrace of the new era.

With a standard ticket priced at £42 ($53) for same-day entry, some critics argue that the London Eye is too costly.
However, those stepping off the giant wheel after a serene journey above the city shared with AFP that the breathtaking views made it a worthwhile experience.
