Once a bustling tourist attraction, Mayem Lake has witnessed a sharp dip in popularity over the years. Concerted efforts by successive govts for its revival have not borne results.

Located in Bicholim taluka, Mayem Lake used to be a sought-after destination among Indian and foreign tourists. Busload of people would line up towards the lake to enjoy its picturesque scenery.

To turn around its fortunes, several entertainment avenues like bungee jumping, boating activities and a garden have been unveiled. However, the state authorities have been unable to effectively tap these initiatives for tourism potential. The lack of footfall has also put a dent in the local economy.

During 2012-17, then Bicholim MLA, the late Anant Shet had embarked on a rejuvenation exercise of the lake. However, the project came to an end after his tenure.

Subsequently, his successor Pravin Zantye unveiled a plan to construct kiosks for local vendors. However, the locals objected to the project and instead demanded permanent shops. While 36 of these were later handed over to the locals, the shops have remained unoccupied owing to the minuscule number of visitors at the lake.

Last year, incumbent legislator Premendra Shet inaugurated a tourist bus to Mayem with the intent of commencing regular trips to the lake. On the inaugural day, a packed tourist bus that arrived at Mayem Lake brought hope to locals. However, there have been no such trips after the inaugural, a villager said.

Locals suggested that private agencies could include Mayem Lake in their travel packages.

“The tourism department should reach out to contact private tour operators. This will benefit us,” said a local Deepak Kinalkar.

Govt hopes to leverage its existing resort-cum-cottages as well as three dormitories run by Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) to increase footfalls.

“There are around 17 rooms in the lodging and boarding hostel, out of which only 4-6 of these used to be occupied on weekends. We can explore the possibility of attracting tourists through a private agency which can benefit GTDC in the long run,” an official said.
