Emirates cancels Dubai to Frankfurt flights as massive strikes at Germany’s airports disrupt travel, impacting thousands of passengers and global operations.
Emirates Airline, the Dubai-based international carrier, announced the cancellation of multiple flights to and from Frankfurt, Germany, slated for March 10 due to a scheduled strike at the airport.
The industrial action, orchestrated by the Ver.di trade union, targets public service and ground handling personnel at several major German airports including Munich, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, and Berlin-Brandenburg.
Specifically, Emirates has cancelled flights EK43 from Dubai to Frankfurt, EK44 from Frankfurt to Dubai, and EK46 from the same route due to the strike. Additionally, Emirates flight EK48 from Frankfurt to Dubai will face significant delays, rescheduled to fly as EK8048 and depart Frankfurt at 5:30 pm local time on March 11, arriving in Dubai early the next morning.
Despite these disruptions, flights EK45 and EK47 from Dubai to Frankfurt remain unaffected and will operate as scheduled. Emirates has begun the process of automatically rebooking affected passengers and sending updated travel itineraries to their registered email addresses.
The airline also noted potential delays at other German airports, including Hamburg, Munich, and Düsseldorf, and has made arrangements for passengers affected by disruptions on March 10. Those holding tickets issued before March 8 have options to rebook for earlier travel or to alternative nearby airports served by Emirates.
The strike, affecting over 500,000 passengers, is part of a larger wage dispute involving the Ver.di trade union and the German federal government, with demands for higher wages, better bonuses, and more leave days for public sector employees.
This industrial action is impacting other airlines as well, including Germany’s Lufthansa and Eurowings, and international carriers like Ryanair. It is part of a broader labor movement in Germany, which has seen strikes across various sectors including healthcare and education, putting pressure on the government to improve working conditions and wages.
The disruption extends beyond Germany, with Emirates also cancelling flights between Dubai and Houston due to severe winter weather in the United States, affecting broader US aviation operations. Emirates has provided a dedicated page for flight status updates and is offering rebooking assistance through local offices for those affected by these disruptions.
