Air France-KLM sees strong premium demand from US travelers, driving growth despite inflation, strikes, and Olympic challenges, eyeing a stronger 2025.
Air France-KLM navigated a turbulent 2024 with resilience, concluding the year on a high note despite numerous setbacks. CEO Ben Smith, in a recent discussion with The Financial Times, underscored the airline’s reliance on high-spending American travelers, particularly those booking premium cabins.
The airline group ended the year with stronger-than-expected financial results, with a robust fourth quarter bolstering overall profitability. However, several hurdles—such as operational disruptions from the Paris Olympics, labor strikes, inflationary pressures, and mounting maintenance expenses—impacted the airline’s bottom line. Air France-KLM posted an operating profit of $1.73 billion, reflecting a 6.4% dip compared to 2023.
US Market Driving Premium Bookings
Looking ahead, CEO Benjamin Smith remains optimistic about 2025, highlighting that many of the extraordinary costs incurred last year are unlikely to resurface. The airline is particularly banking on sustained demand from the United States, which has consistently been its most lucrative market.
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Smith emphasized that American travelers continue to dominate bookings in premium cabins, reinforcing their critical role in the airline’s revenue strategy. The company expects this trend to persist, especially as high-spending passengers opt for its premium seating options over economy.
Potential Trade Tariffs Could Impact France-US Travel
Despite the optimistic outlook, uncertainties loom over transatlantic travel. Former US President Donald Trump has suggested imposing tariffs on European Union imports, citing concerns over trade imbalances. While he has previously referenced a trade deficit of up to $350 billion, data from the US Department of Commerce indicates that the 2024 deficit in goods and services stands closer to $160 billion.
Should such tariffs materialize, they could potentially impact outbound travel from France to the United States, adding a layer of unpredictability to Air France-KLM’s long-term growth strategy.
